Our veterinarians

Five veterinarians see patients at Animal Hospital at Grayhawk. Dr. Berman and Dr. Kitchen own the practice and work in it — there is no corporate parent and no regional manager above them.

Katie Kitchen

Katie Kitchen, DVM

Veterinarian / Owner

  • Fear Free Certified
  • University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, DVM 2011

A 2011 graduate of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Kitchen has been in practice for 15 years.

Before buying Animal Hospital at Grayhawk, Dr. Kitchen worked at Faust Animal Hospital in Phoenix for nearly four years. Born and raised in Arizona, she graduated from Deer Valley High School and Arizona State University West before heading to Minnesota for veterinary school. That is where she met her future husband, Dr. Berman. It did not take much to convince him that sunshine beat snow, and they moved back to Arizona shortly after she graduated.

Away from the hospital, Dr. Kitchen spends her time with her husband, their twin boys, and the rest of the family: Mason, an Australian Shepherd, the Siamese cats Melvin and JB, Yoshi and Carrot the guinea pigs, and Tworty the tortoise. Given any downtime, she reads or plays silly games on her phone.

Dr. Thomas is a Phoenix native who has been around animals from a very young age, and started working in a veterinary clinic at fifteen. She earned a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from the University of Arizona. After several snowy winters during veterinary school, she was glad to come home to Arizona.

She has been practicing in the Scottsdale area since graduating, and enjoys building lasting relationships with pets and their families.

Outside the hospital, Dr. Thomas shares her home with Muffin, a small poodle mix, and Neville, a spirited three-legged cat. She paddle boards, does pilates and barre, lifts weights, and reads.

Before veterinary school she studied and bred black widow spiders in the university's ecology department, and she has practiced in Scottsdale since graduating.

How we work

Fear Free is not one doctor's approach here. It is how a visit is run.

Pre-visit medication for pets we have seen before, cats kept out of sight of other pets, an exam wherever your pet is most comfortable, and a visit stopped rather than forced.
