Pet vaccinations

Vaccines are among the cheapest medicine in the building and among the easiest to get wrong by treating them as a checklist. “Get your shots” is not a real answer. Which vaccines your pet needs depends on their age, their species and how they actually live — a dog boarded over every school holiday and walked on desert trails is not carrying the same risk as one who goes out to the same yard twice a day.

What happens during a vaccination visit

Vaccines work by showing the immune system a small, modified or inactivated piece of a disease-causing organism, so that it recognises the real thing and can respond quickly if your pet is ever exposed. The point of the visit is not to give as many as possible. It is to sort them into two groups.

Core vaccines are recommended for essentially every pet, whatever their lifestyle, because the diseases they prevent are severe, widespread, or a matter of public health. Lifestyle vaccines are recommended on the basis of real exposure. A dog who boards, goes to the groomer or spends time at dog parks carries different risk from one who mostly stays home, and an indoor-outdoor cat carries different risk from a strictly indoor one. Which of those are due now, which come later, and on what interval for a puppy or kitten series, is decided in the room from your pet’s age and history rather than handed over as a generic printout. If records from a previous practice exist, bring them; the schedule is built on what has already been given. The rattlesnake vaccine — what can and cannot be said

AAHA’s 2022 canine vaccination guidelines state that there are no published data documenting the efficacy of the rattlesnake venom toxoid vaccine in dogs, and note reports of severe allergic reactions in some previously vaccinated dogs that were later envenomated. The manufacturer does not publish independent efficacy data either.

What is not in dispute: a vaccinated dog that has been bitten still needs the same emergency care, including antivenom where it is indicated, as an unvaccinated one. The vaccine is not a substitute for getting to a veterinarian immediately. Fear Free at a vaccination visit

Common Fear Free technique is the smallest appropriate needle gauge, injections at the end of the visit rather than the start, food or a lick mat as distraction during the injection itself, and sequencing multiple injections to keep total restraint time short — none of it should be claimed without confirmation

The difference matters more than it sounds. Handled well, a vaccination visit is a genuinely uneventful few minutes. Handled badly, it can be the single memory that makes every appointment after it harder, for a pet who may need dozens of them over a lifetime.

Who gives the vaccines
